In this article we will briefly talk about the equipment used in simultaneous interpretation. Interpretation (sometimes called translation) requires electronic equipment in most cases, with exceptions like whispering. We classify our equipment in two categories: full equipment for conference interpreting and portable equipment for simultaneous interpretation for field visits or small meetings.
1 ) Simultaneous conference interpretation equipment (full equipment):
This system is used for conferences with large audiences where you need to maintain fluid lectures and avoid problems or interruptions. This system includes the use of:
a) Microphones for speakers:
These capture the sound that will be sent through the PA system, but above all they serve to capture the voice of the presenters so that the interpreters can clearly hear and understand what is being said withour effort. With this method anyone speaking must use a microphone so that the interpreters can listen and translate.
b) Interpreter’s booth:
An interpretation booth is where the interpreters listen to the audio captured bu the microphones and from where ther broadcast their interpretation to the audience., through radio or other methods. The booth also serves to isolate the interpreters from the room’s noise and prevents them from bothering the audience with their simultaneous interpretation.
c) Interpretation receivers:
This devices receive the interpretation broadcast from the booth and allow the audience to listen to it though headphones. They can work on several frequencies so that members of the audience can listen to different languages –if there are interpreters for each language.
2) Portable interpretation equipment for small meetings and field visits (basic equipment):
This kind of equipment is used when people need to move around or for small meetings where the installation or use of more equipment can obstruct conversations. With this method, for example, people can speak naturally without having to use a microphone all the time. It uses only a transmitter and receivers.
a) Portable transmitter:
This is a small device that can be clipped to the interpreters’ belt or put on a pocket. It is battery-operated so the interpreters are free to move anywhere. It is ideal for field visits or for tourist groups. The transmitter is used with a headset microphone.
b) Interpretation receivers:
This devices receive the interpretation broadcast from the booth and allow the audience to listen to it though headphones. They can work on several frequencies so that members of the audience can listen to different languages –if there are interpreters for each language.
